National Recovery Month: Party in the Park, ID

Region 1 Department of Health and Welfare worked with the Faith Community Coalition to come up with 2 goals for Recovery Month:

1) Increase awareness of alcohol and drug addiction and the need for recovery support within churches. A video, bulletin insert, and event poster were provided to over 30 churches within Region 1. This was a follow-up from last years recovery month activities when Access To Recovery information and SAMHSAs brochure for clergy were sent out to churches within the region.

2) Provide a fun opportunity for individuals and the community as a whole to celebrate individuals and families in recovery. Party in the Park took place on Saturday, September 9th at Coeur dAlene City Park. Luke Malek, Representative for Governor Risch and Sandy Patano, State Director for US Senator Larry Craig opened the event. The Celebrate Recovery Band from Real Life Ministries put on a wonderful concert. Lake City Community Church brought 1000 hotdogs to barbecue and give away and we had 2 jumping castles that were busy all afternoon. Twelve churches were represented at the event and recovery support resource tables included information and brochures from Hayden Lake Friends Church 24/7, Good Samaritan Rehabilitation, Real Life Ministries - Celebrate Recovery, Faith Community Coalition, Ernest Alexander Youth Horizons, Department of Health and Welfare - Access to Recovery, Port of Hope, St Vincent de Paul, Catholic Charities, From Despair to Hope, Lake City Community Church Food Bank, and AA, & Al-Anon. Twenty individuals told their recovery story. Individuals kept coming up saying that they felt led to tell their story. All were excellent and the crowd was cheering them on and very supportive. One couple brought their entire extended family on stage and talked about how their familys support made the difference in their recovery. Around 500 people attended Party in the Park and it is estimated that 75% were individuals in recovery. The event was a huge success and we hope to do this every year.
