AmeriCares Helping Ike Survivors for the Long Haul

Woman waits to be evacuated after her home was damaged by Hurricane Ike in Galveston, Texas.

With at least five health clinics devastated by flooding due to Hurricane Ike, AmeriCares Mobile Medical Clinic and crew are committed to remaining in the Galveston-Houston region of Texas for at least a month, if not longer. Relief supplies and emergency response specialists have been sent to the hardest hit areas.

Having sustained severe damage, it is anticipated that much of the Houston-Galveston area will be without power for some time.

AmeriCares Mobile Medical Clinic runs on an independent power generator and is stocked with essential medicines and medical supplies. The Clinic will provide medical services to returning evacuees, many of whom are in need of chronic care medications and immediate aid.

“The need for assistance and support is great as residents in the affected region return home,” said Curt Welling, president and CEO of AmeriCares. “We will remain in Texas as long as is necessary to support the individuals and families affected by Hurricane Ike.” Read more >>

Responding to Food Crisis around the World

According to the United Nations, the number of hungry people increased by 50 million in the last year – that’s the combined populations of Florida, New York and Illinois. Soaring food prices and fuel costs are sure to raise that number this year. While the global food crisis has gained much media attention in the U.S. over the past few months, the world’s poorest countries have been struggling with food shortages and chronic malnutrition for years. Two countries where AmeriCares is making a difference are El Salvador and Haiti. Read more >>

AmeriCares Delivers New Aid to West Darfur

With the help of many generous supporters, AmeriCares has just delivered our 10th emergency shipment to Darfur since 2004. The delivery contains more than 15 tons of critical medicines and medical supplies to West Darfur and brings the total aid delivered to Darfur since 2004 to more than 167 tons, valued at nearly $5 million. Our staff is working hard to secure additional aid for North and South Darfur, and two more shipments are planned in the coming months.

AmeriCares is one of the few international relief organizations allowed to fly directly into Darfur. Flying into West Darfur, one of Sudan’s most dangerous and hard-to-reach regions, eliminates the risk of delays common to shipments delivered over land. Read more >>
