Machinery Technician School

Overview. The Machinery Technician School provides advanced and entry level training to the largest rate in the Coast Guard. The school provides over 15 courses to include hands-on training and instruction in:

• Internal Combustion Engines
• Engineering Administration
• Governors
• Hydraulics
• Refrigeration
• Air Conditioning Systems
• Other auxiliary systems

Students perform hands on training to include overhaul and operation of internal combustion engines, air conditioning units, hydraulics and other auxiliary systems common to Coast Guard units during instruction. The school includes the Machinery Technician "A" course and numerous Machinery Technician "C" courses. All students attending courses must have an updated Common Access Card and know their CAC Personal Identification Number (PIN). Failure to do so will cause an unnecessary training delay.

Machinery Technician "A" Course (MK "A")

Overview.This intensive 12-week course located in Martin, Elbert and Villarreal Halls teaches selected non-rated personnel to perform as junior petty officers at an entry-level job in the Machinery Technician rating. Students are taught principles of theory, operation, maintenance, repair and troubleshooting of mechanical, auxiliary, hydraulic, pneumatic, and electrical machinery and systems. The following topics are covered during the course :

• Leadership
• Mechanical Skills – Tag-out, Gauges & Thermometers, Valves, Tubing, Piping, Packing, Gaskets, Seals, Flange Shielding, etc.
• Hydraulic Theory, Maintenance and Troubleshooting
• Flexible Hose Maintenance and Repair Procedures
• Centrifugal Pump Theory, Maintenance, Overhaul and Troubleshooting
• Pump Shaft Alignment Procedures
• Propulsion Shafting Seals
• Air Compressor Theory and Maintenance
• Basic Electrical Theory, Wiring, Maintenance and Troubleshooting
• Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Theory
• Outboard Motor Theory, Maintenance, Tune-up and Troubleshooting
• Requisition and Supply Procedures (Fedlog, MICA)
• Internal Combustion Engine Theory, Maintenance, Overhaul, Casualty Control and Troubleshooting
• Fuel/Oil, Engine Coolant, Hydraulic Oil and Lube Oil Testing

Prerequisites. Available from governing Coast Guard directives.

Safety. Students are not allowed to wear contact lenses during welding, fire fighting, and practical damage control training phases.

Machinery Technician "C" Courses

These courses include a wide variety of specialized training and instruction in shipboard fire fighting and damage control systems, test and field equipment, and associated skills. Machinery Technician courses are offered at Martin and Elbert Halls. All students attending courses must have an updated Common Access Card and know their CAC Personal Identification Number (PIN). Failure to do so will cause an unnecessary training delay.  Specific courses are:

• Caterpillar 6.25" Bore Diesel Engine (MK-25)
• Caterpillar 3400 Series Diesel Engine (MK-26)
• 270' WMEC S/S Generator, Waste Heat Recovery System & Evaporator (MK-27)
• 270' WMEC Main Propulsion Control & Monitoring System (MK-29)
• Paxman Valenta RP200M Diesel Engine (MK-30)
• Caterpillar 3300 Series Diesel Engine (MK-31)
• CATERPILLAR 3508 MAINTENANCE COURSE (MK-34)
• CATERPILLAR 3608 MAINTENANCE COURSE (MK-36)
