Many aspects of the program are still in the developing stages and there are some unanswerable questions about the program. However, the site visitors thought that what the Region is working toward is good, and that they could confidently report finding a viable Region which should become an operational regional medical program. February 1969 Council approves proposal with recommendations suggested by Committee. Main comments: 1. Reviewers accepted the recommendations of the site visit report. 2. Noted that the development of local planning committees to achieve local involvement, is a creditable component. 3. Core staff is making desirable efforts to contact persons in the periphery about the RMP. 4. Involvement of physicians, allied Health personnel, and hospital administrators has been accomplished. Funded Operational Projects #1 -- CORONARY CARE UNIT EDUCATION Ob ectives: This is a training program for practicing nurses nurse-educators, and physicians. It is a coopera- tive effort between the Central Ohio Heart Association and the Ohio State University College of Medicine. Hospitals in 10 cities will serve as the "core" of each surrounding geographi- cal area. Two nurses will be selected from each core hospi- tal for intensive training in Columbus as nurse educators. Seminars for physicians will be held in core hospitals. There will be two programs for training practicing RN's. A full-time, 2-week course will be given in Columbus; courses will be offered in the core hospitals one evening per week in 2-hour periods for a total time of 33 weeks. If course space is available, applicants will be accepted for the program in Columbus from outside the area of the Central Ohio Heart Association. (The CORA covers 47 of the 61 counties within the OSRMP.) Audiovisual equipment and supplies are requested in order to investigate the types of aids needed by the core hospitals to insure adequate presentation of professional materials. #2 A REHABILITATION TRAINING PROJECT FOR HEALTH PROFESSIONALS (LICKING COUNTY MEMORIAL HOSPITAL) Objectives: A model stroke rehabilitation unit will e developed in phases, which consist of placint completed stroke patients on a single unit; acquiring aid-to-daily living equipment; and organizing an occupational therapy unit. A beginning faculty will be designed from among existing personnel at the hospital and additional faculty will be recruited in order to expand educational activities into homes, nursing homes, and continuing educa- tion programs. The project director, assisted by consultants in medical education, will develop instruments for evaluation. The types of measures to be developed are discussed in the application. One goal of this project is to develop a body of educational materials and training experiences. #3 CAREERS IN HEALTH SCIENCE PROGRAM Objectives: This project is designed to stimulate interest among high school students in health science careers. It will be directed by volunteers and existing staff of the Ohio Academy of Sciences. The Academy previously has engaged in a number of recruitment activities which can be modified to the health sciences. #4 SUDDEN DEATH: A MOBILE CORONARY CARE UNIT Objectives: Funded 7/l/68 from earmarked funds; this is appropriated to continue 2 more years. It is viewed as an investigation and fact-finding activity; to investigate the events leading to either "sudden death" or myocardial infarction outside the hospital; and to study the effectiveness of preventive and therapeutic efforts. #5 THE DEVELOPMENT OF A CRITICAL DATA BASE FOR PLANNING Objectives: Funded as feasibility study 7/l/68. Original purpose was to develop Data Bank to assist in assessment of health needs and resources of community served by OSRMP. Undertaken by the Division of Community Health of the Department of Preventive Medicine at Ohio State. Data Bank is intended to serve needs of other agencies, institutions and regional medical programs'in t e State. #6 PROPOSAL FOR THE USE OF COMPUTER-ASSISTED INSTRUCTION IN MEETING INFORMATION NEEDS OF LOCAL COMMUNITY HEALTH PRACTITIONERS Objectives: Funded as feasibility study. Activity con- stitutes continuing effort, within the health field, to establish and evaluate a computer-based information network having CAI capabilities. Project will expand the small network established during the first year in 4 com- munity hospitals to additional hospitals throughout the Region. This expansion includes provisions for cost sharing by local communities. #7 COUNCILS FOR CONTINUING EDUCATION: A PROJECT TO DEVELOP COORDINATED PROGRAMS FOR HEALTH PROFESSIONALS Objectives: Seeks to develop a mechanism for coordinated programs of continuing education. An area or local council for continuing education will be established in Springfield, Ohio. Educational needs and desires of health personnel in the area will be studied, and Educa- tional Programs developed. Bibliography of resources available locally will be prepared. Council will serve as a clearinghouse of information about programs that would benefit health personnel. #8 COUNCIL FOR CONTINUING HEALTH EDUCATION: A PROJECT TO DEVELOP ORGANIZED EDUCATION PROGWIS FOR HEALTH PROFESSIONALS Objectives: To develop a Council for Continuing Education composed of the leadership from all health professions in the Greater Portsmouth Ohio area. Generally intends to coordinate existing continuing education oppor- tunities, to create new programs to meet documented needs, to act as a clearinghouse for information, and to evaluate the total program.
