While operating an X-ray machine recently at Fayetteville (N.C.) Regional Airport, Lead Transportation Security Officer Cherie Cooper spotted an image of a handgun and ammunition clip. Cooper promptly summoned a Fayetteville police officer who took control of the carry-on bag which included a Colt Mark IV .38-caliber semi-automatic pistol and ammunition clip with four rounds.

"Cherie's alertness and quick response is indicative of her performance as a lead officer," said Christine Roe, Fayetteville's assistant federal security director. "She is a valued member of our original team." Cooper joined TSA in August 2002 when federal operations began in Fayetteville.

The passenger was arrested by police and charged with carrying a concealed weapon.
