John F. Kennedy Library

In May 2005 the library accessioned a map of Cuba that President Kennedy used during the first EXCOM meeting on the Cuban Missile Crisis. The map was brought to the library's attention after it had been offered for sale for $750,000 on the web. The library, with the indispensable assistance of NARA's General Counsel and the U.S. Attorney's Office in New York City, brought a replevin action to regain the map. The suit was recently settled, resulting in the return of the large, full-color map showing the location of the missile sites marked in the President's handwriting.

In June 2005 the library accessioned eight archival containers boxes of JFK Senate files and personal and Presidential documents that had been improperly kept by his personal secretary and which she later sold or gave to Robert White, a Kennedyana collector.

The library accessioned 27 textual accessions totaling 8.5 cubic feet, including

  • research files of Dave Armstrong,

  • personal papers of William Flick, and

  • accretion to the personal papers of Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy, mother of President Kennedy, and author, Times to Remember (1974).

This quarter the library has also accessioned interviews with 32 returned Peace Corps Volunteers and 246 photographic items, 74.8 hours of audio recordings, and 4.5 hours of video recording film.

Lyndon Baines Johnson Library

The following oral history transcripts were accessioned and are available for research:

  • Phyllis O. Bonanno, personal assistant to President Johnson and later first director of the U.S. Trade Representative's Office of Private Sector Liaison in the Executive Office under Presidents Carter and Reagan. 126 pages.

  • Elizabeth "Liz" Carpenter (special interview with Douglass Cater), journalist and several positions during Johnson's Vice Presidential and Presidential years. 25 pages.

  • Ava Johnson Cox, Lyndon B. Johnson's cousin and childhood companion. 46 pages.

  • Olga Bredt Gideon, secretary to Texas House Speaker Bob Calvert (1930s), Sim Gideon (1940–41), Senator Alvin J. Wirtz (1941–51), and Congressman Judge Homer Thornberry (1951–72). 31 pages.

  • Ralph K. Huitt, staff aide to Senator Lyndon B. Johnson, 1953–54; legislative assistant to Senator William Proxmire, 1958–59; and Assistant Secretary for Legislation, Department of Health, Education and Welfare, 1965–69. Interview I is 42 pages, and Interview II is 28 pages.

  • Frank W. Lehan, President's Science Advisory Committee member and Assistant Secretary for Research and Technology in the Department of Transportation. 62 pages

  • Doris Powell, a lifelong Taylor family friend. 22 pages.

  • Paul L. Thornhill, Air Force lieutenant colonel and pilot for Johnson (1962–69). 49 pages.

  • Tom and Betty Weinheimer, ranch owners in Stonewall, TX, and neighbors to the Johnsons. 48 pages.
