Gunner's Mate

Overview. The weapons school provides Gunner's Mate training ranging from fundamental rate-specific training needed by entry level petty officers to advanced courses in weapons systems, hydraulics, electricity, electronics, and small arms instruction. Weapons School courses emphasize hands-on training in well-equipped labs and firing ranges. Courses include Gunner's Mate "A" School and several Gunner's Mate "C" Schools.

Gunner's Mate "A" School

This intensive 10 week course located in Taylor Hall teaches selected non-rated personnel to perform as junior petty officers at an entry level job in the Gunner's Mate rating. Students learn the administrative, operation, and maintenance skills needed to operate and maintain Coast Guard small arms and machine guns. Course topics include:

  • Coast Guard Ordnance
  • Pyrotechnics and Ammunition
  • Magazines
  • Small Arms
  • Machine Guns and Small Arms Administration
  • Ordnance Administration

Gunner's Mate "C" Courses

These courses include specialized training and instruction in Coast Guard Weapons Systems and Small Arms instruction. All students attending courses must have an updated Common Access Card and know their CAC Personal Identification Number (PIN). MK 38 25MM Machine Gun System (GM-8)

One week course of instruction that is designed to teach operation, maintenance, troubleshooting and use of the Mk38 Machine Gun System.

MK 36 MOD 1 Decoy Launching System (SRBOC) (GM-9)

Four day course of instruction on designed to teach maintenance and troubleshooting the Mk 36 Mod 1 Decoy Launching System. Students must have satisfactorily completed GM "A" school.

Mk 75 Operation and Maintenance Course (GM-11)

14-week course of instruction designed to teach Gunner's Mates the operation and maintenance of the 76mm 62 Caliber Gun Mount, Mk 75 Mod 0. The course also includes basic hydraulics, electricity, and electronics principles. Students must have satisfactorily completed GM "A" school.

Small Arms Instructor School & Tactical Weapons School

For Coast Guard members, the Small Arms Instructor School & Tactical Weapons School can be found on TCYorktown's Intranet site under Training accessible via a Standard Coast Guard Workstation.
