ABRFC Precipitation Products |
Every hour (usually between half past and the top of the hour), the HAS forecaster creates a gridded (4 km x 4 km) precipitation field. This field is a combination of both WSR-88D Nexrad radar precipitation estimates and raingauge reports. These gridded fields are used as input into the ABRFC's hydrologic model. During non-staffed hours, an automated procedure creates these fields, however there is no quality control performed on these products. The HAS forecaster updates these products in a timely fashion later. Also, several other precipitation products are created, usually automaticly during the day. These include: six and 24 hourly precipitation totals (created by adding up the individual hourly products), a precipitation field since 12Z (the hydrologic day runs from 12Z to 12Z), and several long-term precipitation fields (monthly, yearly and year-to-date).
The precipitation fields are saved in two formats, GIF images for viewing and netCDF for use in other projects and research. Also, a text product is produced that list all observed reports of precipitation within the ABRFC area.
