Description:
A large tree with a narrow rounded crown. Widespread in moist soil of bottomlands and uplands mostly in the eastern portion of our region. The leaf base surrounds the bud. The wood is heavy, hard and stiff. A major lumber species with many uses. The wings on the fruit (samaras) extend to the base of the body. Fruit is eaten by squirrel and some birds. Leaves may be browsed by white-tailed deer and some livestock.
