TITLE: The Warren and Margot Coville Collection of Photographs from the
Clarence H. White School of Photography
SPEAKER: Warren Coville, Kathy Erwin
EVENT DATE: 10/11/2001
RUNNING TIME: 47 minutes
DESCRIPTION:
Warren Coville describes his experience collecting works by photographers associated with this influential, but historically under-appreciated school. Joining him is Kathy Erwin, Curator of the Coville Collection.
Speaker Biography: In 1987, Warren Coville promised 78 fifth graders at Roosevelt Elementary School, the elementary school he had attended, that if they graduated from high school he would pay for their higher education. These 78 children became part of the I Have a Dream program that he launched in Detroit. In addition to the I Have a Dream Foundation, he and his wife Margot established the Trico Foundation, a Coville-Triest Family Foundation; and were benefactors of JARC, establishing the Warren and Margot Coville Scholarship Fund for Independent Living, and of Jewish Family Service, endowing its Coville Group Apartments for the Elderly Project. A native of Detroit since age 7, and founder of Guardian Photo, Coville holds a distinguished record of volunteer activities, which reflect his interest in photography, the arts and education. He has served as chair of the Trico Foundation, and as a board member of the Cranbrook Academy of Art, the DIA, George Eastman House, Hutzel Hospital, Jewish Family Service, Jewish Home and Aging Services, MSU Alumni Association, Pistons/Palace Foundation, Temple Beth El and United Jewish Charities. Currently, in Sarasota, Fla., he serves on the boards of the Asolo Theater Company, the Jewish Family and Children's Service and the Jewish Housing Council Foundation. Kathy Erwin currently serves as curator of the Coville Collection.
