Jonathan Abraham, a UGSP Scholar, is one of six students awarded a 2006 Gilliam Fellowship by the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI). The fellowship supports up to five years of doctoral studies for disadvantaged students, including minorities under-represented in the sciences.
When he was younger, science helped Jonathan adapt to a new culture and a new language. "I was born and raised in a French-speaking city outside of Montreal," Jonathan says. "When I moved to the United States with limited English skills, science became a universal language that I quickly learned."
Jonathan graduated from Harvard University in 2005 and is currently conducting a year of research at the NIH. Under the mentorship of Dr. Gary Nabel, Director of the NIH Vaccine Research Center, Jonathan is conducting structural studies of an Ebola glycoprotein, a protein the virus needs to enter cells.
Several universities have accepted Abraham for their M.D./Ph.D. programs, and he is currently deciding which to attend.
