The Effects of "Tight Money" on Small Business Mergers

This study was of 21 acquiring firms and the 21 small firms they acquired. Of the two, capital costs were found to be less for the acquiring firms. After the merger, the acquiring firms enjoyed scale economies in capital expenditures and employment.

An Empirical Study of Merger Motives

Completed under an interagency agreement with the Federal Trade Commission, the purpose of this study was to determine the underlying motives for corporate mergers in order to assist policy makers in determining when mergers may occur and in evaluating the public and private consequences of merger activity. The study's findings imply that mergers are consummated for numerous reasons, but the data do not show any clear pattern.
