The Office of Scholarly Programs, in conjunction with the Dana Foundation, Heinz Family Philanthropies and the National Institute of Mental Health, sponsored a two-day conference, "Demons of the Mind: 21st Century Science vs. Depression," bringing together top neuroscientists and mental health experts to discuss mental depression.
Speaker Biography: Dr. Gerald Fischbach is the Nathan Marsh Pusey Professor of Neurobiology at the Harvard University Medical School. He is chairman of the departments of Neurobiology at Harvard Medical School and the Massachusetts General Hospital. He was also the founding director of the Harvard University Initiative on Mind, Brain and Behavior.
Speaker Biography: Dr. Charles B. Nemeroff is the Reunette W. Harris Professor and Chairman of the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Emory University School of Medicine.
Speaker Biography: Dr. Dennis Charney is the dean for academic and scientific affairs at Mount Sinai School of Medicine and senior vice president for health sciences at The Mount Sinai Medical Center, as well as the the founding director of the Mood and Anxiety Disorders Program.
Speaker Biography: Rene Hen is associate professor at Columbia University's Center for Neurobiology and Behavior.
Speaker Biography: Dr. Wayne C. Drevets is a senior investigator for the National Institute of Mental Healths' Mood and Anxiety Disorders Program.
Speaker Biography: Dr. Helen Mayberg is professor of psychiatry and neurology at Emory University.
Speaker Biography: Dr. Steven Hyman is a noted neuroscientist and author whose laboratory research focuses on how the neurotransmitter dopamine produces long-term changes in brain function by regulating the expression of genes. Earlier in his career, he served as director of the National Institute of Mental Health and director of psychiatry research at Massachusetts General Hospital.
