ELSI Committee Releases Statement

The Statement on the Principled Conduct of Genetic Research, developed by the Ethical, Legal, and Social Issues Committee of the Human Genome Organisation (HUGO), was approved by the HUGO Council on March 21. The statement is based on four tenets: recognition that the human genome is part of humanity's common heritage; adherence to international norms of human rights; respect for the values, traditions, culture, and integrity of participants; and the acceptance and preservation of human dignity and freedom. The full statement is available via WWW (url no longer available) and from the HUGO Americas office (301/654-1477, Fax: /652-3368, hugo@gdb.org).
