Human Genome Declaration
On July 28, 1997, an intergovernmental committee adopted a Draft Universal Declaration
on the Human Genome and Human Rights at the Paris headquarters of the United Nations
Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). Designed to protect
humanity from abuses made possible by genetic science while remaining open to
medical research, the declaration can be viewed on the Web (url no longer available).

The draft declaration and guidelines on genetic research and practices,
which took more than 50 experts and 4 years to prepare, was expected to be
submitted for adoption at the UNESCO general conference in the fall of 1997.
