The Office of Scholarly Programs, in conjunction with the Dana Foundation, Heinz Family Philanthropies and the National Institute of Mental Health, sponsored a two-day conference, "Demons of the Mind: 21st Century Science vs. Depression," bringing together top neuroscientists and mental health experts to discuss mental depression.
Speaker Biography: Kathleen Merikangas received her bachelor's degree in experimental psychology and music from the University of Notre Dame, her master's in clinical and counseling psychology and a Ph.D. in chronic disease epidemiology from the University of Pittsburgh. She currently serves as senior investigator at the National Institute of Mental Healh. Before joining the NIMH, Merikangas was the director of the Genetic Epidemiology Research Unit in the Department of Public Health at Yale. In 2001, Merikangas became chief of the section on developmental genetic epidemiology within the NIMH's Mood and Anxiety Disorders Program, as well as associate director of epidemiology.
Speaker Biography: William Eaton is a professor of mental health at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.
Speaker Biography: Myrna Weissman is professor of psychiatry at Columbia University and chief of the Division of Clinical and Genetic Epidemiology at New York State Psychiatric Institute.
Speaker Biography: E. Jane Costello is associate professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Duke University Medical Center.
