Ted Kooser, in his second term as Poet Laureate Consultant in Poetry to the Library of Congress, opened the Library's 2005-06 literary season with a reading of his work.
Speaker Biography: Ted Kooser, who won the 2005 Pulitzer Prize for his book "Delights and Shadows" (Copper Canyon Press, 2004), was born in Ames, Iowa, in 1939. He earned a bachelor's degree at Iowa State University in 1962 and a master's at the University of Nebraska in 1968. He worked for years as an executive in the insurance industry. Kooser teaches as a visiting professor in the English department of the University of Nebraska at Lincoln. Kooser is the author of 11 collections of poetry. His most recent books are "Flying at Night: Poems 1965-1985" (University of Pittsburgh Press, 2005) and "The Poetry Home Repair Manual" (University of Nebraska Press, 2005), which offers practical advice for beginning poets. In addition to his collections of poetry, he wrote a book of essays, "Local Wonders: Seasons in the Bohemian Alps" (2002), which won the Nebraska Book Award for Nonfiction in 2003. Kooser is also the author, with his longtime friend Jim Harrison, of "Braided Creek: A Conversation in Poetry" (2003).
