The 2005 National Book Festival Authors' Breakfast and Opening Ceremony hosted by First Lady Laura Bush, took place at the White House early on Saturday morning, September 24. In addition to Mrs. Bush, speakers at the ceremony were Librarian of Congress James H. Billington, authors Festival authors Robert MacNeil and Myrka Dellanos, and two representatives from the NBA/WNBA's "Read to Achieve" reading promotion program: Baron Davis of the Golden State Warriors and Diana Taurasi, of the Phoenix Mercury.
Speaker Biography: For over a decade, Myrka Dellanos has been the No. 1 U.S. born, bilingual broadcast journalist in Spanish television. More than 20 million viewers throughout the United States, Latin America and worldwide have come to embrace and welcome her into their homes and families. She was the host of Univision Network's successful news magazine show "Primer Impacto" for 10 years and now has her own prime time program, "En Exclusiva con Myrka Dellanos" or "Exclusively with Myrka Dellanos," where she interviews the news makers of the moment. She has received numerous awards in journalism, including two Emmy Awards -- one each for news reporting and news writing. Her new book is "Triunfa y se Feliz; cosas que aprendi gracias a Dios, a mi madre y a la vida" or "Succeed and Be Happy; things I learned thank God, my mother and life" (Random House, 2005). She lives with her 11-year-old daughter in Florida.
Speaker Biography: Robert MacNeil's career in journalism spans over 40 years from his start at the Reuters News Agency in London, his entrance into television at NBC in 1960, through to his collaboration with Jim Lehrer on PBS's award-winning "The MacNeil/Lehrer NewsHour," the nation's first full hour of evening news. He retired from daily journalism in 1995 and turned to writing books including "The Story of English" (1986), an international best-seller co-authored with Williams Cran and Robert McCrum; two volumes of a memoir: "Wordstruck" (1989) and "Looking for My Country: Finding Myself in America" (2003), and his most recent book, "Do You Speak American?" (Doubleday, 2005), the follow-up to his award-winning documentary, "The Story of English." Mr. MacNeil lives in New York.
Speaker Biography: A member of the Golden State Warriors, Baron Davis has become a true all-star both on and off the court. A two-time NBA All-Star, Davis also operates two nonprofit foundations focused on helping at-risk youth. The Baron Davis Foundation and Rising Stars of America serve the common welfare of youth in the Oakland/San Francisco Bay area and Los Angeles metropolitan communities. Last fall, Davis launched a nonpartisan voting campaign for the 2004 presidential election, encouraging African Americans to vote in the state of Louisiana, when he played for the New Orleans Hornets. After being traded from the Hornets to the Warriors in February, Davis finished the season strong with an average of 19.2 points per game, and ranked seventh in the league for triple-doubles. He achieved his career high of 40 points vs. Houston on April 5, 2005.
Speaker Biography: Diana Taurasi, the Phoenix Mercury's 2004 WNBA Rookie of the Year, has become one of the most well-known women's basketball players in the world. Off the court, Taurasi is actively involved in the WNBA's community initiatives, serving as the national spokesperson for the nationwide Be Smart-Be Fit-Be Yourself fitness campaign and working closely with the WNBA Read to Achieve and Jr. WNBA programs. On the court, this All-Star finished the 2005 season ranked number 3 in the WNBA in three-point field goals made (56.0), number 4 in points per game (16.0) and number 5 in assists per game (4.5).
