FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
October 21, 1999

NOTE TO EDITORS:

EIA Web Site Recognized as One of the Best In Government

The Web site of the Energy Information Administration (www.eia.doe.gov) has been selected by Government Executive magazine as one of the sixteen best Federal Web sites for 1999.

The announcement of the winners, published in GovExec.com ( www.govexec.com/bestfeds/99bestfeds.htm), highlighted that, "EIA is a tiny agency, so the comprehensiveness of its site - and its ease of navigation - amazed the judges. Everyone who works in the energy industry is well-served by this site." EIA also was commended for making full use of the power of e-mail by featuring e-mail notification lists for more than 30 different energy subjects.

To make the selection of the best Federal sites, a pool of 120 nominees, submitted by Federal Webmasters, site customers, and other interested parties, was narrowed to 50 finalists. The judges' decisions were based on three criteria:

  • Customer Service: Provides excellent services to the public by having a well-designed site that includes a large amount of useful information.

  • Business Practices: Uses the Web to improve business practices in an individual agency or across government.

  • New Technologies: Makes use of new technologies that other Federal sites should consider emulating.

The judges for this third annual competition acknowledged they had a wide range of talent to choose from, and that a "pretty face and great links are no longer enough to qualify as a top Federal Web site. Technological know-how and customer service are what really counts." Other winners included Web sites from well-known agencies including the U.S Mint, the Census Bureau, Voice of America, and Small Business Administration.

The report described in this press release was prepared by the Energy Information Administration, the independent statistical and analytical agency within the U.S. Department of Energy.  The information contained in the report and the press release should be attributed to the Energy Information Administration and should not be construed as advocating or reflecting any policy position of the Department of Energy or any other organization.
