HOUSTON -- Better safety and health for construction employees is the goal of a renewed partnership among the U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), the Houston Chapter of the Associated General Contractors of America (AGC) and the AGC Texas Building Branch. "The renewal of this partnership for the next five years represents the U.S. Labor Department's commitment toward protecting the well-being of America's construction employees," said Dean McDaniel, OSHA's regional administrator in Dallas. "The partnership helps to ensure that goal is accomplished." Nearly 50 company chief executive officers, other executives and safety professionals representing 13 construction companies joined with OSHA, the AGC Houston Chapter and the AGC Texas Building Branch to renew their mutual commitment to promoting construction safety in the Houston area and the state of Texas. Mark Briggs, director of OSHA's Houston South Area Office, and John Lawson, director of OSHA's Houston North Area Office, attended the partnership signing ceremony. President and Chief Executive Officer Jerry Nevlud represented the AGC Houston Chapter. Steve Dishman, representing the AGC Texas Building Branch's executive committee, also signed. In 2007, the partners conducted more than 4,000 inspections on jobsites, and identified and corrected more than 22,000 hazards relating to falls, along with electrical, caught-between and struck-by hazards. OSHA's Strategic Partnership Program is part of U.S. Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao's ongoing efforts to improve the safety and health of employees through cooperative relationships with trade associations, labor organizations, employers and employees. More than 1.4 million employees and more than 26,000 employers across the United States have participated with OSHA in 532 strategic partnerships since the program began in 1998.
