Reducing injuries and illnesses is top priority during $60-million construction project EAST ST. LOUIS, Ill. -- The U.S. Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has agreed to form a safety partnership with Legacy Building Group and Clayco, a joint venture, and their subcontractors with the goal of reducing accidents, injuries and illnesses during the $60 million expansion project of the Casino Queen. "This agreement provides an opportunity for the partners to come together and demonstrate that we all benefit when management, labor and government dedicate themselves to providing a safe and healthful work environment,” said Nick Walters, OSHA area director in Peoria, Ill. Primary objectives of the partnership are to reduce serious injuries and illnesses of all employees at the worksite, increase the number of safety and health programs among contractors and subcontractors and to achieve a lost workday incident rate below the national average. OSHA’s Strategic Partnership Program is part of U.S. Labor Secretary Elaine L. Chao's ongoing efforts to improve the health and safety of employees through cooperative relationships with trade associations, labor organizations, employers and employees. More than one million employees and more than 33,000 employers across the United States have participated with OSHA in more than 440 strategic partnerships since the program began in 1998. OSHA's area office in Peoria is working on the formation of this partnership. Under the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970, employers are responsible for providing a safe and healthful workplace for their employees. OSHA's role is to assure the safety and health of America's working men and women by setting and enforcing standards; providing training, outreach and education; establishing partnerships; and encouraging continual improvement in workplace safety and health.
