Region 2 News Release: 04-669-NEW /BOS 2004-091 Thursday, April 22, 2004 Contact: Ted Fitzgerald Office: (617) 565-2074 OSHA And Small Business Development Centers Team Up To Promote Safe And Healthful Workplaces in Western New York BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Promoting safe and healthful working conditions at small businesses in western New York's 10-county area is the goal of an alliance among the Buffalo area office of the U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and New York Small Business Development Centers (SBDC) located at Buffalo State College, Niagara Community College, Jamestown Community College, and SUNY Brockport/Rochester MetroCenter. OSHA safety and health alliances are part of U.S. Labor Secretary Elaine L. Chao's ongoing efforts to improve the health and safety of workers through cooperative partnerships. "Alliances such as this are the cornerstone in our cooperative efforts to ensure safe and healthy workplaces," said Patricia K. Clark, OSHA's regional administrator. "By working together with the centers, we can reduce injuries and illnesses in small businesses across western New York." The Small Business Development Centers, administered by the State University of New York, seek to improve the operation, survivability and success of small businesses through low-cost counseling and training services that focus on issues critical to the small business owner. "The goal of this alliance is to help foster a culture of safety and health excellence within western New York's small business community through the development of customized training and education programs tailored to the needs of small business owners," said Art Dube, OSHA Buffalo area director. OSHA's Buffalo area office and the centers will develop and disseminate information on safety excellence and management. They will provide hazard recognition training for small businesses and will mentor and counsel them on the merits and means to achieve safety and health excellence. The alliance also will promote participation by small businesses in OSHA's cooperative programs, such as compliance assistance, the Voluntary Protection Program, NYS Consultation and its Safety and Health Achievement Recognition Program. The alliance was signed today at the Administrative Office Building on the campus of Buffalo State College where the Buffalo Small Business Development Center is located. It will remain in effect for two years. Signatories are Clark, Dube, Jim King, director of the New York State Small Business Development Centers; Greg Conrad, supervising safety and health Inspector for the NYS Department of Labor's Consultation Program; Susan McCartney, regional director of the Buffalo State College SBDC; Richard Gorko, regional director of the Niagara County Community College SBDC; Irene Dobies, regional director of the Jamestown Community College SBDC; and Jan Pisanczyn, regional director of SUNY Brockport/ Rochester MetroCenter SBDC. Since 2001, the U.S. Labor Department's Occupational Safety and Health Administration has created more than 160 alliances with organizations committed to fostering safety and health in the workplace.
