Goal of partnership: safer D.C. construction projects WASHINGTON -- Clark Construction LLC of Bethesda, Md., has partnered with the U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) to heighten safety and health awareness on two major construction projects in the District of Columbia. The company and OSHA have committed to reducing injuries and illnesses, and preventing fatalities, on the District of Columbia Major League Ballpark Project and the 51 Louisiana Ave. N.W. project. "The agreements signed today provide an opportunity for OSHA and Clark Construction to demonstrate that we all benefit when management, labor and government dedicate themselves to providing a safe and healthful work environment," said Assistant Secretary of Labor for OSHA Edwin G. Foulke Jr. "We want every employee to go home safe and healthy at the end of the workday." The 51 Louisiana Ave. project includes a 440,000 square foot office building and atrium two blocks north of the U.S. Capitol and over the life of the project will employ 280 construction tradespersons. The ballpark project will employ approximately 85 union contractors with 750 employees. Major goals of the partnerships are to keep the DART (cases with days away from work, restricted or transferred) rate below the national average for the commercial construction industry and to further reduce this level of recordable injuries annually by at least four percent for the duration of the partnership. OSHA's Strategic Partnership Program is part of U.S. Labor Secretary Elaine L. Chao's ongoing efforts to improve the health and safety of employees through cooperative relationships with trade associations, labor organizations, employers and employees. More than 1.2 million employees and more than 33,000 employers across the U.S. have participated with OSHA in 455 strategic partnerships since the program began in 1998. Under the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970, employers are responsible for providing safe and healthful workplaces for their employees. OSHA's role is to assure the safety and health of America's working men and women by setting and enforcing standards; providing training, outreach and education; establishing partnerships; and encouraging continual process improvement in workplace safety and health.
