Highlights material handling, fall protection, trenching and excavation WASHINGTON -- The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and the Modular Building Institute (MBI) joined forces today to further the safety and health of workers in the commercial modular building industry. OSHA and MBI signed a formal Alliance that will provide industry workers and employers with information, guidance and access to training resources on workplace safety and health issues involving material handling, fall protection, and trenching and excavation. "We're proud to unite with MBI to foster a better workplace safety and health environment for thousands of workers in the modular building industry," said OSHA Administrator John Henshaw. "Together, we can make a positive difference in the lives of those workers by focusing our combined efforts on the workplace hazards most prevalent in the industry." Added Tom Hardiman, MBI Executive Director: "Modular Building Institute is proud to be an Alliance partner with OSHA. As the trade association for commercial modular builders and dealers, we know our members are faced with numerous potential safety hazards. This Alliance will help ensure that the resources are available for our members to continue to provide safe work conditions." The Alliance is designed to provide MBI members and others in the industry, particularly small businesses, with information, guidance and access to training resources that will help reduce injuries caused by material handling, falls, and trenching and excavation hazards. Key to the Alliance will be the delivery of OSHA's 10-hour Small Contractor and Construction courses. OSHA and MBI will develop information on the recognition and prevention of workplace hazards, and provide expertise in communicating information to industry workers and employers. Both organizations will participate together in forums, roundtable discussions and stakeholder meetings to discuss workplace hazards in the industry. Additionally, case studies will be developed and disseminated illustrating the business value of workplace safety and health. OSHA and MBI will also forge relationships between MBI's Regional Regulatory Councils and OSHA's regional and area offices, State Plan States and Consultation Projects to address safety and health issues in the industry. MBI is a national trade association representing manufacturers and dealers of commercial modular buildings. Members include manufacturers and dealers of commercial modular structures, while associate members are companies that supply building components, services, and financing. OSHA's role is to assure the safety and health of America's workers by setting and enforcing standards; providing training, outreach, and education; establishing partnerships; and encouraging continual improvement in workplace safety and health.
