July 27, 2004 Contact: Kate Dugan Office: (215) 861-5101 New OSHA Partnership Formed to Protect Hispanic Workers in Northern New Jersey Newark, N.J. -- The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) is teaming up with the Hispanic-American Chamber of Commerce in Essex County (HACCEC) and the New Jersey Department of Labor to ensure that Hispanic employees come home safely at the end of the workday. "Our offices and their allies will reach out to build trust, raise awareness and educate both employers and workers in safety and health," said Patricia Clark, regional administrator of OSHA in New York. "We recognize the value of a collaborative relationship to achieve these goals." The alliance calls for OSHA to deliver its 10-hour construction course in both Spanish and English to Hispanic employers and employees; develop programs for HACCEC members regarding hazards such as falls, electrical and struck by; encourage bi-lingual individuals to take the OSHA 30-hour construction or general industry courses in order to qualify to teach Hispanic workers; promote and encourage HACCEC members to participate in other OSHA programs such as compliance assistance, Voluntary Protections Program, and Consultation. Since 2001, the Labor Department's Occupational Safety and Health Administration has created more than 160 alliances with organizations committed to fostering safety and health in the workplace.
