OSHA Partners with Topeka Home Builders Association

TOPEKA, Kan. -- Promoting safe and healthy working conditions in the local area's residential construction industry is the goal of a partnership agreement signed this week between the U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and the Topeka Home Builders Association (THBA).

OSHA health and safety partnerships are part of Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao's ongoing efforts to improve the health and safety of workers through cooperative initiatives with employer and labor organizations. Under the partnership with THBA, the association's 250 employer members will receive information and services to help them comply with safety and health standards.

"This partnership is an example of Secretary Chao's commitment to foster compliance assistance for workers and employers to improve health and safety for workers," said Charles E. Adkins, CIH, regional administrator for OSHA in Kansas City. "This is the second residential construction partnership in the Midwest region of Iowa, Kansas, Missouri and Nebraska." The first, with the Wichita Area Builders Association, was signed October 22, 2003.

The primary goal of the three-year agreement is to prevent fatalities and reduce the number and severity of injuries and illnesses affecting the employees of participating association members. According to Adkins, fatalities in residential construction accounted for more than 20 percent of all construction fatalities in Kansas from October 1998 to November 2002.

The partnership will be evaluated annually, and either party may terminate the agreement after providing a 30-day written notice.

Additional information about the partnership may be obtained by contacting the OSHA area office in Wichita at (316) 269-6644.
