Satellite and Radar Imagery Movies of Atlantic Hurricane Seasons on DVD

Prepared by:
Donovan Landreneau, Meteorologist Forecaster

This is a collection of video DVDs that show satellite and radar imagery movies ranging from entire Atlantic hurricane seasons to individual U.S. tropical storm and hurricane landfalls. The video DVDs are recorded on 4.7 GB General Purpose DVD-Rs, and play just like a movie DVD. These DVD-Rs should play in DVD-ROM drives on computers with the proper DVD player software, as well as home DVD players capable of playing DVD-R discs. All of these DVD-Rs: 1) have no audio; 2) are region free, meaning that you can play them in any DVD player around the world; and 3) are not copy protected, meaning you can make as many disc copies on your DVD-R/RW recorder drive as you please.

Hurricane Audrey Radar Loops: June 26-27, 1957

This DVD presents rare land-based radar imagery of Hurricane Audrey June 26-27, 1957. The original source was a 16mm film made directly from photographs of the Plan Position Indicator (PPI) scopes of WSR-(1-3) radars from Galveston, Houston, Beaumont, Lake Charles, and Baton Rouge. The author used a 16mm projector to display the movie on the screen while recording it with a DV camcorder, then transferring it to DVD.

1971-1975 ATS Visible & SMS Imagery Movies

1976-1980 Hurricane Season GOES IR Imagery Movies

1981-1986 Hurricane Season GOES IR Imagery Movies

These DVDs present a chronological succession of geostationary satellite imagery for the Atlantic, Caribbean, and Gulf of Mexico (except 1978 that uses GOES-West for the Eastern Pacific movie).  The original source of these movies was 16mm films, which NCDC transferred to VHS tapes.  The author transferred these VHS tapes to DV tape, then to DVD. This would explain some of the resolution loss, especially with the 1980 loop, which came from a second generation VHS copy.

These DVDs present a chronological succession of half hourly GOES‑East satellite imagery for the Atlantic, Caribbean, and Gulf of Mexico.  The length of a normal season of satellite imagery (from 06/01 to 11/30) should be just over 14 minutes, but with the satellite eclipses, its closer to 13 minutes.  The following lists the date spans and type of imagery used for each year.

2000 (infrared imagery) from 08/04 to 10/31
2001 (infrared imagery) from 06/01 to 12/05
2002 (infrared, water vapor, visible imagery) from 06/01 to 11/30
2003 (infrared, water vapor, visible imagery) from 04/15 to 12/15
2004 (infrared, water vapor, visible imagery) from 06/01 to 12/05
2005 (infrared, water vapor, visible imagery) from 06/01 to 01/10/2006
2006 (infrared, water vapor, visible imagery) from 06/01 to 11/30
2007 (infrared, water vapor, visible imagery) from 05/01 to 12/15

These DVDs chronicle the life cycles of the tropical cyclones that affect the United States each season with GOES infrared and visible satellite imagery, and is followed by land based National Weather Service WSR-88D radar imagery in the areas affected. The DVD is menu driven, with separate storm sub-menus describing the areas affected. Within each storm sub-menu, separate satellite and radar sub-menus allows the user to choose which satellite or radar sequence to view.
