Water catchment systems are not recognized as potable water, and there is no government agency oversight of these systems in Hawaii. Because they are private systems, their maintainence and proper usage is the responsibility of the system's owners or users. For health and safety reasons, homeowners should not use rainwater catchment water for direct consumption or food preparation.

The Department of Health (DOH) - Safe Drinking Water Branch currently subsidizes the testing for lead and copper in individual homes served by rainwater catchment systems. Owners or users of rainwater catchment systems can take advantage of the program once per year. Under this program, the owner or user of a "legal dwelling" can submit a water sample from their rainwater catchment system to a participating analytical laboratory for testing of lead and copper in the water.

The owner must pay for the shipping of the sample and $25.00 for the analyses. The State will be billed for the remaining cost of the analyses. AECOS Laboratory, Inc. is currently approved by DOH. Be sure to ask the laboratory if they participate in the DOH subsidized lead and copper testing program. Due to the contractual nature of the analytical work, the DOH cannot pay for analyses of any other contaminants or work submitted to any other laboratory.

Water test kits for fecal contamination, PH and chlorine, all specifically designed for rainwater catchment water, are available at: http://www.hawaiirain.org/resources/kits.php

The University of Hawaii - College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources (CTAHR), at: http://www.ctahr.hawaii.edu published Guidelines on Rainwater Catchment systems for Hawaii in 2001. The guidelines can be downloaded or ordered by mail with this form. More information on rainwater catchment design, maintenance, and applications is available at: http://www.hawaiirain.org
