Staying Health During the Holidays

HONOLULU – The Hawaii State Department of Health (DOH) is reminding the public that there are many ways to help prevent the spread of illness and have a healthy holiday season.

"Hawaii’s influenza rates traditionally peak after the holidays," said Chiyome Fukino, M.D. Director Hawaii State Department of Health. "The best thing you can do for your loved ones is stay away if you are sick and practice good respiratory etiquette."

Good respiratory etiquette includes:

  • Staying home if your sick -- away from others that could become infected
  • Covering you mouth and nose when you cough or sneeze
  • Washing your hands frequently with soap and water
  • Avoid touching your eyes nose or mouth

Also, getting plenty of rest, eating nutritious food and limiting the intake of alcohol can strengthen the immune system and help keep the holidays healthy.
