National Board Selects DOH Forensic Director to Represent Western Region in Mental Health

Dr. Reneau Kennedy, Forensic Director of the Department of Health, Adult Mental Health Division was elected to serve a two-year term on the National Association of State Mental Health Program Directors (NASMHPD) for Forensic Director’s National Executive Council. Kennedy represents the Western Region of the U.S. which is made up of sixteen western states including Hawai`i, and Guam and American Samoa territories.

"This appointment will provide an exciting opportunity to be involved at the cutting edge of the field," Dr. Kennedy said. During her term, she will work to address professional standardization and evidence-based practices in the forensics field.

The purpose of the Forensic Director’s Council is to gather individuals directly responsible for the administration of state forensic systems in order to:

  1. Provide a mechanism for collection, study, discussion, resolution and dissemination of problems, ideas, models, information, and approaches to the planning, development, and operation of state forensic systems, programs and facilities;

  2. Promote and to participate in training and in development of appropriate standards;

  3. Improve the quality, effectiveness, and pursuit of excellence in forensic administration.

"These issues directly relate to the good work that the Hawai`i State Hospital and the Adult Mental Health Division are presently developing," she said.

Dr. Kennedy worked in the discipline of psychology with liaisons in law and psychiatry for over 20 years. She earned a doctoral degree from Boston University and did her pre- and post-doctoral work in three of Harvard Medical School’s programs. She maintains licensure in both Massachusetts and Hawai`i.

Dr. Kennedy is a current member of the Society for Personality Assessment, the American Psychological Association, the Hawai`i Psychological Association and the Homicide Research Working Group.
