Alan Q. Radke, M.D. has been appointed Medical Director of the Adult
Mental Health Division of the Hawaii State Department of Health. He
will be joining the Division on January 6, 2003.
Dr. Radke brings to the Division, during a period of rapid service
development and change, extensive knowledge and experience in the
implementation and operation of community-based and inpatient mental
health services to those who suffer from serious and persistent mental
illness.
Dr. Thomas W. Hester, Chief of the Adult Mental Health Division,
said "Dr. Radke’s solid experience in all aspects of the
development and operations of a mental health system of services will
greatly contribute to the Division’s current efforts."
Dr. Radke comes to Hawaii from the Minnesota Department of Human
Services where he served as State Medical Director for the past seven
years. His principle responsibilities included strategic planning for
State operated hospital and community services (SOHCS), consultation
within the Department of Human Services to its various related
administrations, liaison to stakeholders of the Minnesota public mental
health system, statewide mental health education and training, and
clinical operations oversight of SOHCS.
The Minnesota mental health system of services is composed of five
state hospitals, a forensic hospital, a neurorehabilitation hospital,
six chemical dependency programs, two adolescent treatment programs, a
mental retardation and related conditions treatment facility, a pattern
sex offender program, a state nursing home, and state operated
community services. The total annual operating budget for these
services is approximately $257,000,000.
In addition to his responsibilities with the Department of Human
Services, Dr. Radke was Clinical Professor of Family Practice and
Community Health with the University of Minnesota and Assistant
Professor of Clinical Psychiatry with the Department of Psychiatry,
Uniformed Services University of Health Sciences.
Prior to Dr. Radke’s association with Minnesota’s
Department of Human Services, he served as Chief of Community
Psychiatry at Walter Reed Army Medical Center and Division Psychiatrist
and Chief of Mental Health for the 101st Airborne Division
at Fort Campbell, Kentucky.
Among Dr. Radke’s numerous professional affiliations, he
serves on the NASMHPD State Medical Directors’ Council. He is a
member of the American Association of Community Psychiatrists, American
Association of Psychiatric Administrators, American College of
Physician Executives, Association of Military Surgeons of the United
States, Minnesota Medical Foundation, Minnesota Psychiatric Society,
and National Association for the Mentally Ill.
