Thomas Stone National Historic Site

When Thomas Stone signed the Declaration of Independence he literally wrote himself into American history.
Immerse yourself in revolutionary history. Visit the restored house and stroll the 322 acres of Haberdeventure, a “dwelling place in the winds”. Purchased in 1770 by Thomas Stone, this restored plantation home has been open to the public as a National Historic Site since 1997.

SPECIAL EVENTS

Charles County 350th Anniversary and 4th of July Commemoration July 4, 2008

To celebrate Charles County's 350th Anniversary in 2008, Thomas Stone National Historic Site, in cooperation with the Charles County 350th Anniversary Committee is proud to announce, "Charles County: Players Through Time", which will be held at the park on Friday July 4, 2008 from 10:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. This program will focus on all of the people who helped shape Charles County, southern Maryland and American history including the Native Americans who first occupied this region and later traded with the early European explorers, the African-Americans who were brought here as slaves, yet who formed a key facet in the success of the plantation economy of the area, and the Europeans themselves. Scheduled activities include Piscataway Indian crafts and exhibits, historic toys and games, a reading of the Declaration of Independence, and horse drawn carriage rides. Come take a step back in time and view how these peoples helped to shape our nation.

Visitors are welcome to attend Ranger led programs and tour the home of Thomas Stone.
Park Visitors can also experience the site at their own pace; stroll across the the park grounds amidst the farm buildings or travel the old farm trace roads and imagine the past.

Climate

Summers are generally hot and humid with occasional thunderstorms. Winters are generally mild with variable precipitation. Wearing layers of clothing is recommended during late fall, winter, and early spring.

Thomas Stone's great-great grandfather William Stone was the first Protestant Governor of Maryland.He was the first Stone to live in Maryland, but branches of the Stone family have lived in Charles County since the county's founding in 1658.
