Factors affecting drop out rate of community volunteer AIDS educators.

Kabwa PB, Isoke BA, Nyakahuma GN; International Conference on AIDS.

Int Conf AIDS. 1996 Jul 7-12; 11: 189 (abstract no. Mo.D.1791).

Kabarole District Community AIDS Prevention Initiatives (KDCAPI), Kampala, Uganda, E. Africa.

Issue: Community based programmes for HIV/AIDS prevention have attracted a lot of support and admiration. Success of these programmes still continue to be hampered by a high volunteer drop-out rate. Project: A community initiative AIDS/STD prevention programme was started in 20 parishes. The integrated approach focused on AIDS/STD education, income generating activities for vulnerable groups, home based care, counselling and a condom social marketing component. Villages and parishes were sensitized and mobilised to form committees that were responsible for planning, fund raising and implementation of these initiatives. A total of 200 volunteer community AIDS educators were trained. Results: The male female ratio was 1.1:1. After 3 years of the programme, 40% of the educators had dropped out. Out of these 62.5% were male. 60% of the male drop outs were single compared to 33% of the females. 66.6% of all the drop outs did not have any other meaningful source of income. 61.7% of all the drop outs had not gone beyond primary school. 56% were below 30 years old.Lesson learned: In this community drop out rate of community volunteers is determined by sex, marital status, source of income and educational level. Age did not seem an important factor.
