Oil Code Thickness and Concentration Values

Bonn (BAOAC) Data

The following graphics help spill observers estimate the thickness and volume of oil on the water.

The Bonn* table, below, shows thickness and concentration ranges in metric and English units for each of the oil codes: S, sheen (silver/gray); R (rainbow); M (metallic); T, transitional dark (or true) color; and D, dark (or true) color.

Note the use of capital letters for thickness codes (S, R, M, T, & D). Use of these codes makes it easier to create and interpret sketches by aerial observers.
