Downloading, Installing, and Using Spill Tools

To download Spill Tools, click one of the links in the Downloads section, at page bottom.

Spill Tools was first webposted by NOAA's Office of Response and Restoration (OR&R) on 6/22/98. A modified version for Windows 95/98/NT/XP was posted on 9/08/04.

Installing Spill Tools

... on a Windows PC

Once you have downloaded the installation program,

  • in Windows 95, 98, NT, or XP, in the Explorer, double-click the "1187_Spiltool_Win95-XP.exe" file icon, then follow the directions you'll see on your screen.
  • in Windows 3.1, in the File Manager, double-click the "1188_Spiltool_Win31.exe" file icon, then follow the directions you'll see on your screen.

... on a Macintosh

The Spill Tools installer program has been compressed so that you can download it from the Internet. Some browsers are configured to automatically decode compressed files. If yours is, you should see a file called "Spill Tools Installer" on your desktop. If your browser is not configured to decode files, you need a decoding utility (such as Stuffit Expander) to install the Spill Tools. To uncompact the installer program, use your decoding utility (if you are using StuffIt Expander, either (1) drag the file onto the Stuffit Expander icon on your desktop, or (2) start Stuffit Expander, then from its File menu, choose Expand, then select the file).

Once you have uncompressed the Spill Tools Installer, double-click it, click Install after viewing the introductory screens, and then follow the directions you'll see on your screen. The installer will look for a folder named "Hazmat." If it doesn't find this folder, it will create a new "Hazmat" folder on your hard drive (or startup volume, if you have more than one drive).

Running Spill Tools

... in Windows

To start Spill Tools in Windows 95, 98, NT, or XP, from the Start menu, under Programs, from the Spill Tools submenu, select either Dispersant Mission Planner, In-situ Burn Calculator, or Mechanical Equipment Calculator. To start Spill Tools in Windows 3.1, in the Spill Tools program group in the Program Manager, click either Dispersant Mission Planner, In-situ Burn Calculator, or Mechanical Equipment Calculator.

... on a Macintosh

Open the "Hazmat" folder, and then, to start

  • the Mechanical Equipment Calculator, double-click "Mechanical Equipment Calculator."
  • the In-situ Burn Calculator, double-click "In-situ Burn Calculator."
  • the Dispersant Mission Planner, double-click "Dispersant Mission Planner."

... in all cases

The Spill Tools installer created a "Hazmat" directory (folder) at the location you indicated on your hard drive, and placed Spill Tools and its supporting files in that directory (folder). To ensure trouble-free operation of Spill Tools, do not move any files out of the "Hazmat" directory (folder) or rename any files it contains. It serves as the location for several NOAA OR&R software products (some supporting files used by Spill Tools are also used by other software we produce). To ensure that you can download other software later without problems, don't move or rename the "Hazmat" directory (folder).
