Berkeley Lab’s ALD for Physical Sciences oversees the Laboratory’s Physical Biosciences, Chemical Sciences, Materials Sciences, Advanced Light Source, and Environmental Energy Technologies Divisions. Paul Alivisatos holds a B.A. in Chemistry, with honors, from the University of Chicago, and a Ph.D. in Chemical Physics, from the University of California at Berkeley. He was appointed the ALD for Physical Sciences in 2005 by Berkeley Lab Director Steven Chu, and he has a joint appointment with UC Berkeley where he is a professor of Chemistry. Alivisatos also serves as scientific director of Berkeley Lab’s Molecular Foundry.

Berkeley Lab’s ALD for Operations/Chief Operating Officer oversees the Laboratory’s Environmental Safety and Health, Facilities Management, Financial Services, Human Resources, Information Technology, and Public Affairs Divisions and Departments, plus the Office of Workforce Diversity. Krupnick, who has been with the Lab since 1976, earned his B.S degree in social science and an MBA from UC Berkeley. He was appointed the ALD for Operations in 2008 by Berkeley Lab Director Steven Chu. Previously he was a Division Deputy at the Advanced Light Source, and project director for the construction of the Molecular Foundry, which earned a Green Building Council Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) gold certification, and a “Secretary of Energy's Excellence in Acquisition Award" for the project management team.

Berkeley Lab’s ALD for Life and Environmental Sciences over sees the Laboratory’s Life Sciences, Genomics, and Earth Sciences Divisions. Joe Gray holds a Ph.D. in Physics, from Kansas State University, and a degree in Engineering from the Colorado School of Mines. He has served as a Berkeley Lab ALD since 2003, and has a joint appointment with the University of California at San Francisco, where he is a professor of Laboratory Medicine and Radiation Oncology. Berkeley Lab’s ALD for Computing Sciences oversees the Laboratory’s Computational Research, National Energy Research Scientific Computing Center, and Information Technology Divisions. Horst Simon holds an undergraduate degree in mathematics from the Technische Universtät, in Berlin, Germany, and a Ph.D. in Mathematics from the University of California at Berkeley. Berkeley Lab’s ALD for General Sciences oversees the Laboratory’s Physics, Nuclear Sciences, Accelerator and Fusion Research, and Engineering Divisions. James Siegrist holds a B.A. in Mathematics and a B.S. in Physics, summa cum laude with special honors, from the University of Texas at Austin, and a Ph.D. in Physics, from Stanford University. He has been director of the Physics Division since 1996 and the ALD for General Sciences since 1999. He also has a joint appointment at UC Berkeley as a professor of Physics. Jeffrey Fernandez holds an M.P.A. in Public Administration (with concentrations in Management, Economics, and Public Finance), from George Washington University, and a B.A. in Communications (with minors in Economics, Business, and Accounting) from the University of Vermont.
