In April of 1968, President Lyndon B. Johnson dedicated a new Institute with a mandate to "... bridge the gulf between the lonely scholar in search of truth and the decision-maker in search of progress."

40 years later, the Urban Institute celebrates four decades of service as one of the nation's most respected nonpartisan social and economic policy research organizations.
