Identifying promising new technologies that can save lives is a priority in technology transfer. The NTTC is working with the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) to help the agency develop the next-generation Self-Contained Self-Rescuer (SCSR) system. A respirator with the duration of one hour, the SCSR is a required piece of safety equipment for coal miners in the United States. NIOSH wants to make the SCSR smaller and lighter than its current eight pounds, and to lengthen its service life and maximum oxygen capacity. The NTTC is utilizing its expertise in identifying technologies and developing partnerships to help NIOSH with this initiative.
