EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Since a major disaster declaration for Michigan was announced on June 30, more than $34.6 million in grants and more than $1.9 million in U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) low-interest loans have been approved to help homeowners, renters and businesses recover from the severe storms, tornadoes and floods of May 20–24. Nearly 80,300 people have applied for disaster assistance.
The FEMA Helpline (1-800-621-3362) has received 144,287 inquiries regarding application status or information about disaster recovery programs and services. More than 2,700 people have visited Disaster Recovery Centers with similar inquiries.
The Dearborn Heights DRC at 1999 N. Beech Daly is now open but will close on Friday (Aug. 6) at 6 p.m. The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) will continue to be available (at the same address) to assist those who may need information on disaster loans or help filling out their SBA applications. The SBA loan assistance center will open on Monday, August 9 and hours are Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. to assist homeowners, renters, and business of all sizes with their disaster needs.
The DRC at the Detroit City Airport, 11499 Conner St. will continue to serve those who need disaster information Mondays through Fridays from 9:30 am. to 6 p.m. and Saturdays from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. (This center closes August 20). The Monday through Friday hours will be extended to 7 p.m. beginning on Monday, August 9.
Individuals may apply for disaster assistance by calling FEMA's toll-free registration line at 1-800-621-FEMA (3362) or TTY: 1-800-462-7585. Phone lines are open Monday through Saturday, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. The deadline to register for assistance is August 30, 2004.
On March 1, 2003, FEMA became part of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. FEMA’s continuing mission within the new department is to lead the effort to prepare the nation for all hazards and effectively manage federal response and recovery efforts following any national incident. FEMA also initiates proactive mitigation activities, trains first responders and manages the National Flood Insurance Program and the U.S. Fire Administration.
