Juridical advice broadcast.

Sampaio JC, Souza MB, Mitidieri JS, Farias RF, Rios PD; International Conference on AIDS.

Int Conf AIDS. 2002 Jul 7-12; 14: abstract no. G12555.

Grupo Pela VIDDA/Niteroi, Niteroi RJ, Brazil

ISSUES: The existence of a legislation in Brazil that protects people with AIDS is not by itself a guarantee. The impact of the systematic violation of the rights of such a population motivated a NGO to establish strategies to provide basic information on human rights to the community. Besides the Legal Service we have implemented a Juridical Advice outreach activity program. DESCRIPTION: We implemented a Program of outreach activities that included lectures, individual interviews and counseling, and interventions in waiting rooms and patient's meetings. General information concerning social assistance, rights, and specific educational material are provided. During the individual interviews we also give information on treatment, social life, and quality of life. Learned lessons: The Juridical Advice Broadcast makes sure that only those subjects that need assistence are referred to the Juridical Department, thus optimizing the service. It also enables the pwa to solve their problems without bureaucracy, and therefore exercise their Citizenship fully. Recomendations: NGOs in Brazil need to work spreading information on Human Right, expanding this activity to a larger number of AIDS Health Centers . NGOs must also create a direct link with the Health Units in order to better the integral care to pwa.
