Heme is synthesized in all living cells, but in erythroid cells, additional heme is required to effectively produce physiological amounts of hemoglobin. In fact, more than 80 percent of the heme synthesized in mammals occurs in the erythroid compartment. New discoveries about the role of heme in fundamental cell and molecular biological processes have prompted the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) to organize a 2-day workshop on "Heme Regulation During Erythropoiesis," to be held September 16 - 17, 2008, at the Bethesda North Marriott Hotel and Conference Center. Space at the workshop is limited, so early registration is encouraged. The purpose of this workshop is to bring together scientists focused on: Heme Biosynthesis Heme as a Cofactor and as a Regulator Coordinating Regulation of Heme and Globin Synthesis in Erythroid Cells Heme Homeostasis and Trafficking Heme Catabolism Human Disease and Heme The program consists of plenary speakers who will present their latest research results.
