Welcome to the WW2BW Site

by ww2bw last modified 2007-09-20 12:19

WW2BW is an international alliance of governments, international organizations, financial institutions, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), universities, and corporations that aims to stimulate partnerships for integrated watershed and marine ecosystem-based management.

What is WW2BW?

Created at the World Summit on Sustainable Development (the Johannesburg Summit) in 2002, and formally launched at a Wider Caribbean “Partnership Conference” held in Miami in March 2004, WW2BW has fostered over 100 partnerships since that event.

As an alliance, WW2BW promotes regional cooperation and strengthens developing country capacity to address land-based sources of marine pollution; promotes sustainable tourism, fisheries, agricultural and forestry practices; and prevents the degradation of coastal areas.

Here is some detailed information about WW2BW.

Become a Friend of WW2BW

In the Caribbean region, White Water to Blue Water (WW2BW) can help Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) connect with environmental organizations that are already working to make a difference. Just as importantly, WW2BW can help support and publicize partnerships that maximize an SME's environmental investment.

Founding Partners of WW2BW

There are now many different WW2BW partnerships working in the region, but the initiative first began with a core group of committed organizations that were critical in bringing people together and in making WW2BW happen through their substantial financial and human resource contributions. These include:

  • The Caribbean Environmental Programme at the United Nations Environmental Programme (CEP/UNEP)
  • The U.S. State Department
  • The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) in the U.S. Department of Commerce
  • The U.S. Department of Agriculture
  • The Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science at the University of Miami
  • The United Nations Development Program (UNDP)
  • USAID
  • The Caribbean Conservation Association (CCA)
  • The Caribbean Environmental Health Institute (CEHI)
  • CATHALAC
  • The Swedish International Development Agency (SIDA)

CEP/UNEP Serving as New Secretariat

While there will still be a very committed executive council, as well as core thematic chairs working to implement WW2BW’s strategic plan, the day to day coordination and support for WW2BW is now being done through the Caribbean Environment Programme in Kingston, Jamaica and with the financial support of SIDA. CEP’s leadership is fitting given its on-going programmes with IWCAM, SPAW, CETI and other critical environmental initiatives in the region and given its links with most WW2BW partners. CEP also sees a supportive role for its RACs to play in supporting WW2BW and in outreach with new partnerships. Another major contribution that CEP will bring to WW2BW in the future, is the provision of WW2BW’s services in Spanish and French, as well as English. This new configuration of the WW2BW website is CEP’s first step enhancing secretariat support to WW2BW and will now be done on a sustained basis through the services of a full-time, in-house, webmaster.
