Biological Sensorics Symposium

CSREES Sensorics National Program Leader Dan Schmoldt delivered the keynote address at the first international symposium, "Biological Sensorics: Critical Technologies for Future Biosystems," June 15-17, 2007, in Minneapolis MN. Schmoldt spoke on The Interplay of Biology and Engineering for Smarter Applications. According to Schmoldt, "Biology describes forms and processes of life. Sensorics refers to the science and technology that deals with sensors or sensor systems and their applications. Biological engineering systems are frequently developed through the integration of biological sciences and engineering to enhance living systems of plants and animals and their value to humanity. As a component of biological engineering, biological sensorics improves our measurement, monitoring, management, and understanding of biological systems through better and smarter devices, more capable machines, and more effective information and management systems."

A subset of papers offered at the symposium will be published in early 2008 in a special issue of the journal, Biological Engineering, guest edited by Dr. Schmoldt and Dr. Suranjan Panigrahi, of North Dakota State University.
