U.S. Labor Department's OSHA to take part in safety and health partnership to protect Castleton-on-the-Hudson Bridge Project employees

ALBANY, N.Y. -- Enhanced safety and health protections for more than 120 employees working on the Castleton-on-the-Hudson Bridge Project in upstate New York is the goal of a partnership agreement between the U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA); the project's general contractor, D.A. Collins Construction Co. Inc.; the New York State Department of Labor On-Site Consultation Program; and the Greater Capital Region Building and Construction Trades Council AFL-CIO.

"This partnership emphasizes employee training and an ongoing commitment by contractors to identify and eliminate hazards before they harm employees," said Patricia K. Clark, OSHA's regional administrator in New York. "Other goals include zero fatalities, reduced injuries and full compliance with the project's stringent safety requirements."

Under the partnership, every project subcontractor will be required to have a site-specific safety and health program administered by a qualified person, ongoing safety and health training that addresses new project tasks and processes, a safety and health orientation for all new hires, and successful completion of OSHA training courses by all foremen and employees.

"This partnership is a joint commitment to safety and health that should reduce costs, increase productivity and, most important, help ensure that every employee finishes each workday healthy and whole," said Edward Jerome, OSHA's area director in Albany.

The partnership was signed by OSHA's Clark and Jerome; Thomas Longe, president, D.A. Collins Construction Co. Inc; James Rush, program manager, New York State Department of Labor On-Site Consultation Program; and Paul Engel, president, Greater Capital Region Building and Construction Trades Council.

OSHA's Strategic Partnership Program is part of U.S. Labor Secretary Elaine L. Chao's ongoing efforts to improve the health and safety of employees through cooperative relationships with trade associations, labor organizations, employers and employees. More than 1.2 million employees and more than 21,000 employers across the U.S. have participated with OSHA in 484 Strategic Partnerships since the program began in 1998. Under the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970, employers are responsible for providing safe and healthful workplaces for their employees. OSHA's role is to assure the safety and health of America's working men and women by setting and enforcing standards; providing training, outreach and education; establishing partnerships; and encouraging continual process improvement in workplace safety and health.
