OSHA experts will show how to protect workers and prevent accidents AURORA, Ill. -- Employers in southern Illinois can get help in identifying and eliminating workplace safety hazards at training sessions to be held on April 29 in Carbondale and on April 30 in Red Bud. Co-sponsored by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), the state of Illinois, and Northern Illinois University, safety and health experts will help employers identify and control amputation hazards caused by saws, shears, power presses and other machinery. Amputations occur most often when workers operate unguarded or inadequately safeguarded machinery. "The best way to protect workers is to help employers attain the knowledge and tools to comply with required government safety standards," said U.S. Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao. "The Department is committed to working together with state governments to present this information clearly and thoroughly so workers will be the ultimate beneficiary." A training session will be held on Tuesday, April 29, at Southern Illinois University Dunn-Richmond Economic Development Center, 150 E. Pleasant Hill Road, Carbondale. The training will begin at 10:00 a.m. and end at 3:00 p.m. A second training session will be held on Wednesday, April 30, at Red Bud City Hall, 200 East Market Street, Red Bud. The training will begin at 10:00 a.m. and end at 3:00 p.m. To register for either session, contact the SIU Carbondale Small Business Development Center at 618-536-2424. The fee for each training session is $25. A box lunch will be provided to each attendee. To register online, go to www.imecl.org and view the "Event Calendar". "An average of 10,000 on-the-job amputations occur each year in the United States, according to Bureau of Labor Statistics data," said Michael G. Connors, regional administrator for OSHA. "These training sessions will help prevent tragic workplace amputations." The program is sponsored by a partnership between OSHA, the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity (DCEO) Onsite Safety and Health Consultation Program and the Illinois Small Business Development Center Network, and Northern Illinois University's National Safety Education Center. ### The information in this news release will be made available in alternate format upon request (large print, Braille, audio tape or disc) from the COAST office.
