OSHA, Lamar Bridgeport, Form Alliance to Protect Connecticut's Outdoor
Advertising Workers, Promote Safe and Healthful Working Conditions

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. -- Preventing injuries and promoting safe and healthful working conditions among outdoor advertising workers in southwestern Connecticut are the goals of a newly signed alliance between the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration's Bridgeport area office and the Bridgeport office of Lamar Outdoor Advertising, one of the nation's largest outdoor advertising corporations.

The alliance establishes a collaborative relationship through which OSHA and Lamar Bridgeport will use their collective expertise to share best practices and technical knowledge. This will include providing Lamar Bridgeport workers, as well as employees of other companies in the outdoor advertising industry in Connecticut with information and training to help them reduce and prevent their exposure to injuries from fall, electrical, ladder and other hazards inherent to the industry.

"Knowledge and training are the best defenses against workplace hazards," said Robert Kowalski, OSHA's Bridgeport area director. "OSHA and Lamar Bridgeport will leverage their combined resources to advance worker safety in the state's outdoor advertising industry."

"This is an exciting opportunity for Lamar Bridgeport and OSHA to pool our knowledge and skills in a new and creative way," said James Robertson, Lamar's Corporate Safety Director. "Together, we seek to ensure that workers in the outdoor advertising industry in Connecticut are trained to recognize and prevent the hazards posed by their work."

OSHA and Lamar Bridgeport will develop training and educational programs, present or arrange safety and health courses and develop safety and health curricula. In addition, they will cross-train OSHA personnel and industry safety and health professionals in best practices or effective approaches to workplace safety and health as jointly determined by OSHA and Lamar Bridgeport. Both will seek to raise the awareness of others in the industry by sharing information on best practices with others in the industry, performing case studies and publicizing successful outcomes in a variety of forums.

A team with representatives from both organizations will develop a plan of action, determine working procedures, and identify the roles and responsibilities of the participants. The team will meet at least quarterly to track and share information on activities and results in achieving the goals of the alliance.

Signing the alliance agreement, which will remain in effect for two years, were Robert Kowalski, OSHA's Bridgeport area director, and Daniel Carney, vice president and general manager of Lamar Bridgeport.
