Nursing Administration in Long-Term Care Will focus on ergonomics and promote outreach on nursing home guidelines WASHINGTON -- The Occupational Safety and Health Administration formed an Alliance today with an association dedicated to promoting quality of care and quality of life for long-term care residents. The Alliance will focus on implementing solutions to ergonomic hazards in long-term care facilities. The National Association Directors of Nursing Administration in Long-Term Care (NADONA/LTC) formalized the 23rd national Alliance with OSHA to address worker safety and health issues. NADONA/LTC becomes the 13th group to establish an Alliance that concentrates specifically on ergonomic-related issues and, through the agreement, will help raise awareness of OSHA's ergonomics Guidelines for Nursing Homes so long-term care facilities can reduce ergonomic hazards. "The timing of this Alliance could not have been better," said OSHA Administrator John Henshaw. "This organization serves directors and managers in the long-term care industry and they are well-positioned to help us reduce injuries related to ergonomic hazards in nursing homes and other long-term care facilities. We're anxious to begin working with them and show positive results." "We applaud the efforts of OSHA in establishing ergonomic guidelines specific to long-term care," added Joan Warden-Saunders, Executive Director of NADONA/LTC. "And we're pleased to join in an Alliance that will allow us to reach out to facilities in a non-punitive manner and work cooperatively to enhance the safety within our facilities." OSHA and NADONA/LTC will work together and provide members of the Association with information and guidance to help promote employee health and safety. Both organizations will reach out to the members who may benefit from mentoring or guidance for the development, implementation or improvement of ergonomic programs. In addition to promoting OSHA's ergonomic Guidelines for Nursing Homes, OSHA and NADONA/LTC will disseminate other information at conferences, events and through media outlets, while also participating in conferences, local meetings and other events to promote ergonomic programs. Promoting the national dialogue on workplace safety and health, focusing on ergonomics, is a primary goal of the Alliance. In order to achieve this goal, OSHA and NADONA/LTC will share ergonomic best practices and innovative solutions with others in the health care industry. Both organizations will also share information demonstrating the reduction of ergonomic hazards through the use of programs developed by the Association and share examples of viable ergonomic hazard recognition strategies and analytical tools, while encouraging industry-wide implementation. Rounding out the Alliance is the development of training and education programs on ergonomic issues. NADONA/LTC is a non-profit association of more than 5,000 directors of nursing, assistant directors and nurse supervisors in long-term care. The Association has established Standards of Practice and a Certification System for Directors and Assistant Directors of Nursing in Long Term Care.
