USDA, Others Honor Seven Outstanding Teachers and Researchers
The USDA and eight other federal agencies honored seven outstanding teachers and researchers working at historically Black colleges and universities with Millennium Awards.
The Millennium Award recognizes a select group of college and university faculty who have excelled at teaching or research in mathematics, science, engineering, and technology. The award focuses national attention on teaching and research-which are important to the development of scientific, technological, and professional expertise essential to President Bush's goal of leaving no child behind.
This year, the White House Initiative Office for Historically Black Colleges and Universities sponsored the recognition ceremony for winners from both 2001 and 2002.
Recognized for their high level of dedication to excellence, the following individuals received the National Award for Research:

Dr. Winston A. Anderson, Department of Biology at Howard University
-
Dr. Jerzy Leszczyski, Department of Chemistry at Jackson State University; and
-
Dr. Jagannathan Sankar, College of Engineering at North Carolina A&T State University.
The National Award for Teaching is being awarded to:

Dr. Kenneth Sajwan, College of Biology and Life Sciences, Savannah State University; and
-
Dr. Shingara S. Sandhu, Division of Natural Sciences and Mathematics at Claflin University.
Also recognized for excellence in teaching were:

Dr. Shiladitya R. (Raj) Chaudhury, Department of Physics, Norfolk State University; and
-
Dr. Velma V. Tyson, Division of Science and Mathematics, University of the Virgin Islands.
