Closed roads, reduced visibility, whiteout conditions, farmsteads without access to emergency services, travel delays, dumped milk, stranded motorists, and closed schools. These are real challenges that affect all residents traveling and working through the winter season in
Minnesota.
Since 2002, the Farm Service Agency (FSA) and
Minnesota's Department of Transportation (MN/DOT) have partnered with
Natural Resources Conservation Service, Minnesota Soil and Water Conservation Districts (MASWCD), and 40-50 private landowners to install approximately nearly 20 miles of living snow fence utilizing
CRP practice (CP17A- Living Snow Fence).
Because of new leadership at FSA and MN/DOT, a new Living Snow Fence Memorandum Of Understanding was signed at MN/DOT headquarters on Sept. 5, 2008. Those signing the MOU included Minnesota FSA State Executive Director Perry Aasness, MN/DOT Commissioner Tom Sorel, NRCS State Conservationist Bill Hunt, and MASWCD Executive Director LeAnn Buck.
The
Minnesota Living Snow Fence Program offers an environmentally sound solution for making transportation safer and more efficient during Minnesota winters.
