OSHA Administrator Congratulates Company and Employees DENVER -- Scott's Liquid Gold, Inc., of Denver, was recognized today by the U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) as a Voluntary Protection Program (VPP) site for excellence in their safety and health program. The company has been designated a VPP "Merit" site, meeting all the safety and health program elements for the VPP program, which far exceed minimum OSHA standards. "The Voluntary Protection Program is the Labor Department's premier initiative to promote and recognize excellence in occupational safety and health," said John Henshaw, assistant secretary of labor for OSHA. "The employees and management of Scott's Liquid Gold are to be congratulated for achieving OSHA's official recognition for their efforts." According to Herb Gibson, OSHA's area director in Denver, among the most noteworthy aspects of the company's program are its emphasis on good housekeeping, and its "lockout-tagout" procedures to ensure machinery will not energize during repair or maintenance operations. He also pointed out Scott Liquid Gold's excellent machine operating procedures, its computerized program of hazard prevention, careful identification of laboratory samples, and annual training for employees in safety and health standards. Greg Baxter, OSHA acting regional administrator, and Gibson presented a VPP flag and plaque to Scott's Liquid Gold employees at a ceremony held today at the plant in Denver. VPP offers companies a unique opportunity to move beyond traditional safety programs by recognizing participants that successfully incorporate comprehensive safety and health programs into their total management systems. Requirements for application to VPP include a high degree of management support and employee involvement; a high-quality worksite analysis program; hazard prevention and control programs; and comprehensive safety and health training for all employees. Each element must be effective, in place and in operation for at least a year before applying to join the program. A rigorous weeklong onsite OSHA evaluation verifies that the company has achieved true excellence in their safety and health programs.
